This sulphur smelling gum resin has been consumed as a spice and has also been used for medicinal know how for centuries. The rich yet pungent taste of perumkayam is a staple in a number of traditional dishes which is used as an aromatic. It is used in many pickles, sauces and curries, that have been passed on from generations of families. You have to add this spice in small quantities since a lot can be a bit too overwhelming. The Lakpura Perumkayam is sold in briquette form and it can be used as a substitute for garlic.
Medicinal uses of asafoetida is known to be effective mainly on the digestive system which helps in strengthening and cleansing your gastro intestinal tract while helping with bloating, constipation and indigestion. It also has the potential to treat asthma, bronchitis and coughs while it can act as a sedative that calms you down. It may also have the potential to lower blood pressure levels.
